A New Sonic a New Story
On a quest for world domination Sonic nemesis Dr. Eggman has managed to steal the chaos emeralds once again and this time drained them of their power. As a result not only has the Earth split into distinct sections, so has Sonic. Now he is two beings. During the day he is the usual speed-addicted hedgehog players will remember, but at night he becomes Sonic the Werehog. In either form it is the player's ultimate goal to find the missing chaos emeralds and return them to their proper place in order to set the world and Sonic himself, back the way he should be.

Gameplay: The Two Sides of Sonic
Like nearly all Sonic games, Sonic Unleashed is platform-based. The game combines the feel of 2D side-scrolling that fans of the Sonic series love, with sharp 3D graphics, and throws in an over the back third-person perspective reminiscent of FPS gameplay for good measure. And just as in earlier games, as players race through and explore the expansive world before them, using auto lock to hone in on enemies and areas of interest, they will rely on the power they gain from the rings they collect for a variety of things, but with the new twist of Sonic's split personality, things are a little bit different.

Playing during the day, as you race across the world in the form of Sonic, speed is the main goal. Collecting rings fills you with 'Ring Energy,' which not only provides extra life, but also the advantage of 'Sonic Boost.' With this players can travel at speeds that approximate 300 MPH. In addition, Sonic Unleashed introduces two new features: the 'Speed Drift' and the 'Quick Step'. Speed Drifting is similar to drifting in racing games, allowing players to slide around corners at high speeds, while Quick Stepping is a sidestepping maneuver allowing Sonic to avoid enemies with quick steps to either side. Both keep you moving as fast as possible, so you can get as many rings as possible, which again keeps you moving as fast as possible.

As night falls and Sonic assumes his Werehog form the rings provide a different kind of power more suited to his more menacing appearance. Much slower, but also much more powerful, the Werehog relies on the rings to provide life as well as strength to shield himself from the attacks of enemies. This is necessary because Werehog gameplay, although based in platforming, incorporates significant levels of combat as well. Red orbs gathered as enemies are defeated allow the player to unlock additional combo moves that will supplement the hack and slash and arm stretching abilities that the Werehog always possesses. Whether Hedgehog or Werehog, no matter which form players prefer they will get ample opportunity to explore the two sides of Sonic since each area in the game contains both night and day segments where each form must be played.

Key Game Features:

  • Sonic’s World Transformed - Sonic maintains his high-speed abilities during the day, but at night he is transformed into a mysterious dark form with incredible never-before-seen abilities including 3D-action brawling and amazing agility.
  • Tight Navigation and Speed Control - Players accelerate to super speed with ?Sonic Boost’ by collecting rings to increase Sonic’s ?Ring Energy.’ Using ?Quick Step,’ players will quickly move left or right to avoid obstacles instantly. Additionally, ?Speed Drift’ allows players to rocket through turns without slowing down.
  • Powerful New Engine and Cinematic Graphics - With its new modified game engine, Sonic Unleashed enhances the classic 2D perspective with mind-blowing 3D stages. Other technology capabilities include global illumination, grid computing, continuous data streaming and an intricate path finding system.
  • Enhanced and Expanded Environments - Many unique and fascinating continents offer the player an opportunity to save the world in a dynamic, high-speed experience. In addition to exploring exciting unlockable areas, players dash through up to nine locations resembling real-life destinations including the Great Wall of China, Arctic Pole glaciers and many more.
Whether it's the updated graphics that retain the side-scrolling feel of classic games in the Sonic franchise, an expansive world to race through and explore or the multiple and new ways to play, Sonic Unleashed offers something for players of any age or level of ability.

4 out of 5 stars Fun plus Frustrating   January 9, 2009
This game has a rating of Everyone 10+. There is a reason for the 10 and up, it is kind of hard. Not too hard where the average dogged person can't beat it though.

The game has two main parts, Sonic the Hedgehog where you speed and race to get rings or beat the stage in the specified time limit. And the Werehog, which is a beat-em-up, jumping, climbing, platformer type style. You spin and rotate a planet-globe to select your destination. In each destination is a village with people you can talk to and stages, which are split Hedgehog/Werehog. The cutscenes are unskippable and occasionally you may have watch one you already have seen, depending on when you exit the game and what you accomplished. I did not find the story or cutscenes irritating, and I hated Metal Gear Solid 4's cutscenes. The voice acting was good and story helps you get into the game and they're not too long. I didn't mind them.

Honestly, I prefer the Werehog, contrary to the public opinion. The early Sonic the Hedgehog stages (the normal racing ones), were easy but didn't seem like I had much control. Just get from point A to point B and they'd show him racing through loops and such, although it does look good. Later on they get difficult, especially the last ones. I replayed the same Hedgehog stage over and over again, because I didn't know what to do. Very unfamiliar and unprepared for the type of moves they wanted me to pull off. I'd get up to a point and make one mistake and lose too many lives or in the case of the time attack, lose too much time, and have to start over. They expect you to make a 1/2 second decision as your racing along, and when its your first time, you'll mess up and have to start over. And then get to a point later in the stage and encounter the same 1/2 decision and start all over again. Once you've beaten it though it is easier.

The whole game is easy up until a point. It starts to get hard at the Chinese-type Chunun village. When things started to get difficult, I preferred Werehog stages because I had so much more control and didn't have to restart so many times. You only have 2 lives, which means if you die that much, you have to restart the whole stage. Frustrating when you suck and aren't that good yet and trying to figure out what they want you to do. However, you can get more lives by getting a certain amount of Sun & Moon medals, by completing the Hedgehog & Werehog stages, and those medals will allow you to open the doors in the temples. And once you mess around with jumping around or solving the little puzzle you can get a sonic life. I unlocked 7 sonic lives towards the end of the game, they come in handy during the Werehog stages.

The big boss of the whole game was hard at first because it is unlike Werehog or Hedgehog mode. I got frustrated because it takes awhile and is broken up into 3 parts, which you will have to replay if you fail. I didn't understand what exactly to do, I had to look it up online in a walkthrough and it was much clearer. I didn't need to read much, just point me in the right direction, and I beat it much easier.

This game would be a lot easier if I had to beat it all over again, since I know what to do and how to do it. It's playable and shouldn't be rated below 3 stars.

4 out of 5 stars A gift to my niece   January 7, 2009
I bought this game for my 8yr old niece for Christmas. I got her started on the Sonic series with the original sonic for genesis and all that have followed. She absolutely loves this game and so do I. It keeps with the overall tone of any Sonic game in that it is fast paced and there is a lot to do and explore. Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Better   January 3, 2009
What Happened To The Good old Sonic? This Game Probly Could Have Been Better, And The Werehog Part Is Kinda Annoying. The Sonic Part Is Good But Not As Good As The Other Sonic Game's. I Thought This Game Was Going To Be Better Then The Previous Release ''Sonic The Headchog'' Which That One Wasn't That Good Also.

The Graphic's In This Game Is Good Too, But The Werehog Gameplay Is Also Kinda Frustrating. Even Though You Can Use The Gamecube Controller, It's Still Kinda Frustrating. The Sonic Gameplay Is Better Then The Werehog, So Don't Expect The Werehog Part To Be Really Fun, Cause It's Frustrating.

But Overall This Game Could Have Been Better Without The Werehog Part. This Game Is Okay.

4 out of 5 stars Not nearly as bad as reviews say it is.   January 3, 2009
I went ahead and bought the Wii version of Sonic Unleashed, despite the so-so reviews. After spending almost three hours playing, I gotta say that I'm very impressed.

First off, the graphics are stunning to say the least. Right in the beginning, our eyes are treated to a visual feast of 3D-rendered imagery in the form of an intro video. The graphics here rival that of Super Mario Galaxy.

And then, we have our Werehog levels. After Dr. Eggman ambushes Sonic and drains life from the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic is mysteriously transformed into a Werewolf-like Hedgehog form, a.k.a. Werehog. These levels have been universally panned for their lanky controls and annoying music. I assure you, only the ladder is true. The controls here are far better executed than that of the Xbox and PS3 counterparts. With a bit of patience, you'll be able to zip right through them.

Matter of fact, the PS3 demo for this game made me want to buy the Wii version. So far, I'm far more impressed with this version of the game.

PROS:
-Excellent motion-based controls.
-Also can be played using Classic/GameCube controller.
-Some of the best graphics available for the console.

CONS:
-Werehog levels take a bit of patience to master.
-The combat music in said levels gets annoying, as it never changes.

OVERALL: Aside from the Werehog and the tediousness of controlling him, I have no real reason to put down this game. Immensely enjoyable and wondrous to behold.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome game, hours of fun   December 29, 2008
1 out of 2 found this review helpful

I bought this game for my kids as a Christmas present to play on their Wii. It is awesome, The contrast between night and day is a good touch. The only thing that is annoying is like in the the beginning where you have to listen to them talk and talk and its like 10 minutes before you actually start playing.
Besides that I highly recommend this game my Kids are 11, 8 and 8 (twins) and they love it. I could not decide what game to buy and after 30 minutes picked this one, I am glad I did.
