Product Description

The 1959 Chicago White Sox broke a forty-year pennant drought on the city s South Side, begun after the 1919 Black Sox scandal. The scrappy Go-Go Sox, with pitching, fielding and timely hitting, finally overcame the New York Yankees dominance of the American League, only to lose to the L.A. Dodgers in the World Series.

Go-Go to Glory is a tribute to the men of that Go-Go Sox team. It is more than a simple memoir of a memorable season, providing an in-depth look at an entire era of baseball through the prism of one remarkable team in Chicago. Here you ll find original biographies of every single player, coach, broadcaster and key front-office personnel who contributed to the magical 1959 season, as well as appreciations of the 1950s White Sox by fans and historians. Featuring individual lifetime bios on owner Bill Veeck, Al Lopez, Nellie Fox, Luis Aparicio and 42 other players, coaches, and management of the 1959 White Sox.

4 out of 5 stars The Go Go White Sox of Chicago   September 28, 2009
Wayne B. Tietz (Oswego, Illinois)
The book brought back some wonderful memories of that Championship Season of 1959. I still remember listening to Bob Elson Broadcasting the games on WCFL Radio from Comiskey Park, The Baseball Palace Of The World, on the great South Side of Chicago. Wayne Tietz, Oswego Illinois

5 out of 5 stars Baseball Joy!   August 8, 2009
Louis Kubicki (Illinois)
As a fan of the '59-er's, this book has been an on-going joy. It reaches back to my childhood and has since embossed my spirit with the real people that played "the game". As I read the essays on each of the players, they turn my easy memories into ordinary peopled highlights. I enjoyed my team then and have an appreciation of catching up to them today. This is a book about people, the game and our times.
Part of the joy was the baseball card photos of the players, their stats and finding out about their interests on and off the field. What I imagined then has been tempered by time, as all things are, but what great memories and it is all so good. I have met many of the players and they have all been gentleman and heroes.
Great baseball book/

4 out of 5 stars Great Summer Reading   July 7, 2009
R. McNealy
This is a great summer read for true White Sox fans. Provides detailed, career profiles of every player involved with 1959 team. Profiles executives, coaches, broadcasters, 1959 season, World Series, and season aftermath as well. Ideal for travel or beach, as the profiles are self-contained, so you can read a few, put the book down, and start somewhere else later. A very unique team in that it broke the Yankees' 1950's streak and was dramatically different from the 1954 Indian team which was the only other team to unseat the Yankees in the 1950's - also managed by Al Lopez. Brings back great memories for anyone who lived through the era, is a true White Sox fan, or is just interested in 1950's Baseball. Most nostalgic element is remembering the great young players on that team who were traded by Bill Veeck in a vainglorious attempt for immediate pennant repeat. Instead he saddled the team with "over the hill" veterans, while the "cream of the 1950's farm system" was traded away - Cash, Mincher, Callison, Romano, Battey, Latman. Their presence on the White Sox in the 1960's would certainly have brought at least one or more pennants to this long-suffering franchise. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Go Go to Proofreading   June 16, 2009

I was looking forward to this book but there are many problems. There are too many writers and too many editors and a lack of cohesiveness and many errors. Who is responsible for this mess? We are told Larry Doby was born in 1924 and 2003. Was he reborn? The section on Comiskey Park is "stream of conciousness" without coherence. Too many writers and editors and no one cuts out all the repetition found throughout the text. The Go Go Sox deserve better.
